Spreading Holiday Cheer in Kensington: Our Team’s Afternoon at the Ruth Street
This holiday season, we wanted to spread cheer in a way that truly mattered — and there was no better place to do that than the Ruth Street Garden in Kensington, a Philadelphia neighborhood deeply impacted by the opioid epidemic.

Britt Carpenter and his partners at the Kensington Engagement Center have created something rare and meaningful: a green space where neighbors can harvest vegetables, visit the garden’s beloved chickens, and — importantly — where kids can safely run around without parents worrying about needles or debris. Once an underused lot, the garden is now a place of warmth, belonging, and beauty.

Our team showed up ready to decorate, and the afternoon was filled with energy, connection, and holiday music. Thanks to Braeburn’s donation of holiday decor, we hung garlands, strung lights, added wreaths, and brought festive touches to every corner of the space. Watching Britt guide our team with so much heart was a powerful reminder of how impactful local stewardship can be. By the end of the day, the garden transformed into a bright and joyful holiday space.

Volunteering at the Ruth Street Garden strengthened our connection to the community, deepened our appreciation for Britt and his team, and allowed us to help create a moment of joy during what can be a difficult season for many. The experience reinforced that even small acts of service can go a long way.

I’m truly grateful to the Braeburn team for taking time out of their busy schedules to volunteer— and even more grateful to Britt and the Kensington community for welcoming us. We hope the garden brings comfort, celebration, and a little bit of magic to all who visit this winter.
